The Extended Look

August 2026. Twenty-six minutes of gameplay captured on a base PS5, and the first time anybody saw how the game actually works.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look went out on 27 August 2026. It premiered on Netflix at 3pm Eastern and landed on Rockstar's own YouTube channel six hours later. It peaked at just under four million concurrent viewers, which made it the biggest gaming stream of the year.

Rockstar says it was captured entirely in-game on a base PlayStation 5, so not on a Pro and not on a PC.

Rockstar's own upload on YouTube is age-restricted, so you'll need to be signed in to watch it there.

Where the mechanics pages come from

It's the first time anybody saw the game working. Almost everything on this wiki's mechanics pages comes from these twenty-six minutes:

It opens on a phone call

Raymond, who runs drug production for San4San, takes a call from a man named Ernesto. Ernesto warns him the police are on their way, and frames the warning as a favour from somebody with friends in the department.

So the longest piece of gameplay footage Rockstar's ever going to release starts with a betrayal, and there's no car chase in sight. Honestly, that's the detail we'd point to if somebody asked what kind of story this is going to be.

UK console sales jumped

In the week after it aired, UK console sales went up 33% for PS5 and 34% for Xbox Series X and S. You rarely see a trailer visibly shift hardware, and it's rarer still for a game that isn't exclusive to either platform.

Still turning things up two months later

People are still finding things in it, us included, because a lot of the detail only resolves on the 4K master.

  • A full TV advert. About five to eight minutes in, a television in a kitchen plays thirty-five seconds of an advert for The Prairie Sandwich, which ends on BOX MEAL, ONLY 30,000 CALORIES. Our frame by frame read also found Lasso Fries, BrownStein's Root Beer and an Azteca Gold! truck.
  • Peekhole. A poster inside the Jack of Hearts carries a QR code and the name Peekhole, which fans read as an OnlyFans parody. Rockstar hasn't said what it is.
  • Video Forever. Next door to the shop Lucia robs, about eighteen minutes in, there's a dying video rental place that still says Now stocking DVDs!
  • Lucia's texts. Just under twenty-four minutes in, she texts Jason GUYS EVERYWHERE, then a longer one about a saferoom, ten-plus guys, automatic weapons and explosives. We read them off the master.

What came after it

The Extended Look wasn't the last word. Game Informer's cover story on 29 September brought twelve new screenshots and a lot of talk about weather and wildlife. On 15 October Rockstar followed it with a ninety second launch trailer, also captured on a base PS5, and that one went back to story and left the systems alone.

A cut of that trailer ran as a TV ad during NBA opening night on 20 October. Then on 28 October South Park aired a short clip of new gameplay, Jason on Vice Beach with a bag of dog poop, and Rockstar's thanked in the credits, so it's real footage.

Edge's cover feature on 29 October describes a separate demo Rockstar ran for the magazine, and Edge reports systems the Extended Look never got to: a fuel gauge and engine health on every vehicle, working buses and trains, police dogs and stinger strips. Those details are Edge's account of Rockstar's demo. Rockstar hasn't shown them in a video of its own.

What isn't known

Rockstar hasn't published a breakdown of what was shown. A lot of the systems detail comes from outlets reporting on the footage, and not from anything written on screen. Wherever this wiki relies on that kind of reporting, the page says so.

Some of the things found since are just as open. We don't know who Czr in Lucia's text is, whether Peekhole is an app on the phone or a single poster, or whether the Prairie Sandwich is somewhere you can actually eat.
