Online and multiplayer
Rockstar's own store listings call GTA 6 a single-player experience. There's no online mode at launch and no announced date for one.
This is the question the site gets asked most, and for once the answer's pretty clear.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches as a single-player game. Rockstar and Take-Two have used the phrase *a single-player experience* consistently since pre-orders opened in June 2026, and the same wording's on the official PlayStation Store and Xbox listings. The PlayStation listing's FAQ takes the multiplayer question head on and says the same thing.
There's no announced release date for an online mode, and Rockstar hasn't confirmed that one's coming at all.
Why nobody thinks that's the end of it
Grand Theft Auto Online has been running since 2013, and it's one of the most commercially successful products in the history of games. Take-Two hasn't given any sign it plans to walk away from that, and the company's earnings language has consistently pointed the other way.
There's also a silence you can't miss. When Rockstar confirmed there'd be no microtransactions in single player, it wouldn't discuss how any future online mode would be monetised. That's not a denial.
Take-Two's chief executive Strauss Zelnick has been just as careful. At the company's September shareholder meeting he called the game a single-player title and said there was no recurring consumer spending expected with regard to this launch. The last four words are the ones doing the work, because they describe the launch and say nothing about the life of the game. Take-Two reports its results on 9 November, ten days before release, and that's the next place to listen for the same wording.
A 32 player format, from a tribunal filing
The only detail Rockstar has put in writing came out of a courtroom, and it wasn't in a press release. Rockstar dismissed 34 staff in October 2025, and 31 of them took it to a Scottish employment tribunal. Defending those dismissals, Rockstar had to say what had been leaked. Its own submission, as reported by Dexerto and others, says two staff discussed an online 32 player format which was highly confidential at the time, and it describes the subject as one of the company's most closely guarded secrets.
This one's Reported, and it needs reading closely. It describes an internal discussion. It isn't a product specification, and the format could've changed since. It doesn't say Grand Theft Auto 6 will have 32 player sessions. For scale, Grand Theft Auto Online has run 30 player lobbies since 2013, so 32 would be continuity more than a leap. That comparison's ours. The news piece has the case in full. The hearing was listed to run until 16 October, and no ruling had been reported as of 31 October.
No gambling descriptor in the ratings
The ESRB has rated the game M for Mature 17+, with seven descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It also carries an In-Game Purchases notice, which sits a bit oddly next to Rockstar's no microtransactions line. That label's a broad one and it covers paid add-ons, so on its own it doesn't tell you anything about online. Our ratings piece has the full set.
None of the age ratings shown so far carries a gambling descriptor, though the PS5 release of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Online both do. A rating covers what was submitted, and with no online mode at launch there wasn't anything online to submit. Whatever an online mode ends up including would get rated when it arrives.
A free month of GTA+
The pre-order bonus includes a free month of GTA+, the subscription that's tied to Grand Theft Auto Online, in a game that ships without an online mode. Nobody's explained it. It could be a month to spend in the old game, or a hint at what the subscription turns into. Rockstar hasn't said which.
A December claim from a leaker
A leaker with a reasonable track record on other games has suggested a December 2026 window, roughly a month after launch. Rockstar hasn't confirmed it or denied it, and we're recording it as a claim. It isn't a date. Forbes has floated a much longer wait, one to two years after launch, and that's a guess too.
How online launched in 2013
Grand Theft Auto Online launched two weeks after Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, and it went badly enough that people still remember that first fortnight for lost characters and failed sessions. If Rockstar ships the single-player game clean and brings online in later, that'd be a direct lesson from that launch.
What isn't known
We don't know whether an online mode exists in development, or when it'd arrive. We don't know what the free GTA+ month is for, or how the tribunal's going to end. We don't know if it'd be part of this game or a separate product, how many players a session would hold, or how it'd be monetised. Anyone giving you a date is quoting a leaker.
