The Vercetti Estate

Rockstar says the Ultimate Edition's Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers come from the Vercetti Estate, with palm-tree etched grips in what the copy calls classic Vice City styling.

Why people jumped on one sentence

Tommy Vercetti was the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002, and the mansion he takes over during that game is one of the most recognisable places the series has ever built.

Rockstar has now put the Vercetti name on a location in modern-day Vice City, and it did it in its own published marketing. Nobody had to freeze a trailer to find it as an easter egg. That's the most direct connection yet between this game and the 1986 one.

What a name on an estate does and doesn't mean

Go carefully here, because a lot of confident writing about this has already appeared.

• A named estate isn't a returning character. Tommy would be in his eighties.
• A property can carry a family name for lots of reasons, and most of them are boring. Estates get named after whoever built them, bought them or died in them.
• Rockstar hasn't said anything else. No footage has been tied to the location.

What we can say is that the studio chose to write the name down, and Rockstar doesn't do that by accident. The 1986 game is forty in-universe years back, which is exactly the gap where a name survives as property while the person behind it turns into local history.

Other 2002 names that came back

It's not the only 2002 name to return. Ocean Beach and Washington Beach are both districts carried over from the original Vice City. Rockstar seems to be treating the old city as history the new one's built on top of. It doesn't look like a continuity it wants to reboot.

What isn't known

We don't know where the estate is, what it looks like, whether you can go inside, whether it's in the story, or whether the name refers to Tommy Vercetti at all. One sentence of marketing copy is the whole confirmed record.
