Delight's Cabaret

A neon sign advertising new girls, new food and a hiring notice, all at once. Port Gellhorn in one marquee.

Delight's Cabaret appears in the Port Gellhorn material: a pink and green neon front at night, with a changeable-letter marquee below it and police vehicles parked outside.

New girls, new food, hiring dancers

The sign advertises new girls, new food and hiring dancers, on the same board, at the same time.

That's a full character sketch of a business in about nine words. A venue promoting its menu next to its dancers isn't doing well. A venue advertising vacancies on its own street sign is doing worse. Rockstar has told you the economic state of the whole region without a line of dialogue, and it's funnier than a joke about it would've been.

Somebody sets those letters by hand

A changeable-letter marquee is a real and specific bit of equipment, and it carries information the building can't. Somebody has to climb up and set those letters by hand, so the message is current, and every message is a decision somebody made this week, long after the place was built.

So the neon tells you what the business was aiming for, and the letter board tells you where it's actually ended up. Rockstar has used one sign to date the business twice, in two different tenses, and the gap between them is the whole joke.

It also explains why the hiring notice sits next to the food. Nobody printed that. Somebody chose it, ran out of board, and put it up anyway.

Two hundred miles from the Jack of Hearts

Compare it with the Jack of Hearts in Vice City, which has pink neon, a stage, a crowd and an owner with a property portfolio. It's the same kind of business, two hundred miles and a whole economy apart.

That comparison's the clearest evidence we've got that Leonida isn't one place with regional skins on it. The same industry looks completely different depending on where in the state you find it, and the difference goes deeper than looks: one's a front attached to a supply chain and the other's a building trying to stay open.

The Starlet Motel makes the same argument a few frames away, so it looks like Port Gellhorn has a point to make, on top of an art style.

Police cars in the frame

There are police vehicles in the frame. Rockstar hasn't explained why, and it'd be a mistake to build a story on them. We're recording that they're there, and we're not going to theorise about it.

What isn't known

We don't know whether you can go in, whether it's in the story, who runs it, or whether the police in the screenshot mean anything at all.
