Cal Hampton

Cal's the game's resident paranoid: an online conspiracy hobbyist who listens in on Coast Guard radio for fun and treats the internet as a primary source.

He's in the same circle as Brian and Jason, and he's been spotted at The Rusty Anchor bar. That's how a man whose main hobby is staying indoors ends up next door to a smuggling operation.

Maybe the lookout who doesn't know it

Think about what his hobby actually is. He listens to Coast Guard radio around the clock, and he hangs around with people who run product by boat. Whether he realises it or not, he's sitting on information they could use. Rockstar hasn't said that's his role in the story. But it'd be a very Rockstar joke if the group's early warning system didn't know he was the early warning system.

A conspiracy guy for a present-day game

Grand Theft Auto has poked fun at American media in every game, and it's always gone after whatever was loudest at the time. San Andreas had talk radio. Grand Theft Auto IV and V had cable news, reality TV and the first wave of social media. A game set today has to deal with the fact that the loudest media in America is now a man in a room with a scanner and forty tabs open, sure he's worked something out.

That's Cal. And the series has usually been sharper when the satire's a person you have to spend time with. A radio station's easy to switch off.

Two names for his voice

His casting isn't settled. Different outlets have named Bobby Moynihan and Matty Matheson. Rockstar has never published a cast list for this game, so treat both as speculation until it does. We're noting that the outlets disagree and we aren't picking a side, because a confident answer here would just be somebody else's guess repeated with more conviction.

What isn't known

We don't know how much mission time he gets, whether he's a friend, a contact or a problem, or what he actually knows. Rockstar's kept all of that back. So far he's been shown as part of the scenery around Brian and Jason. Nobody's shown him handing out jobs.
