Wildlife
More than 170 species, native and non native, some of them trackable and graded Rare, Discoverable or Legendary. The non native half is what shows somebody actually researched Florida, beyond just looking at it.
Rockstar's pitch for the wildlife in Grand Theft Auto 6 is a staggering amount of it, across the land, the air and the water, with native and non native species. Two of those words are doing far more work than the rest.
More than 170 species
Rockstar told Game Informer that Leonida has more than 170 animal species, and several of them have never been in a Rockstar game before. Reports on the print issue, including RockstarINTEL's and HotHardware's, break that down as more than 60 types of bird and more than 30 land mammals. That leaves the rest to reptiles, fish and everything else in the water.
Game Informer's web exclusive names flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators among the natives, and green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques among the invasives. The macaques are a precise pick. Florida's had a free-living colony of them along the Silver River since the 1930s.
Kotaku's report on the issue adds sharks and armadillos to the list, and armadillos aren't native to Florida either.
Rare, Discoverable and Legendary
Some animals can be tracked, and those fall into three categories: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar's keeping the identities of the harder ones to itself for now.
Legendary is a word with history. In Red Dead Redemption 2 it meant a single named animal per species, hidden somewhere specific, found by reading clues and worth a trophy pelt. Rockstar hasn't said whether tracking here ends with a rifle, a camera or just a tick on a list. See hunting for the half of this that involves a gun.
Rockstar also described new hair, fur and feather work, and effects like iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency, built on its Red Dead tech. Bioluminescence is a marine detail, and the Keys are the obvious place for it.
Florida's invasive species problem
Florida's defining ecological story is invasive species. Burmese pythons in the Everglades, green iguanas on sea walls, lionfish on the reefs, walking catfish, Cuban tree frogs, feral hogs. It's the subject Florida's wildlife agencies spend most of their budget on, and it's the thing about that environment a studio would only put in a game if somebody had actually read up on the place.
A system that tells native animals from non native ones goes a lot further than a longer animal list. It's a model of an ecosystem under pressure, and the pressure's the interesting part.
The iguana at the top of this page is the clearest published example. Green iguanas aren't native to Florida, but they're established across the south of the state, they grow to exactly that size, and they sit on exactly that kind of rock.
What's been shown
Across Rockstar's own press stills and the twelve screenshots in issue 382:
- Land. A Florida panther wading a creek in Mount Kalaga with four deer on the bank behind it. Deer drinking at the water's edge. Alligators, both in the water and dead on an airboat deck.
- Air. Cranes and egrets in the marshes, birds over the Keys, gulls on the beaches, and birds in flight in the background of a large share of the outdoor shots.
- Around people. A dog on the crowded beach in issue 382, people walking dogs across a footbridge in a state park, and chickens in the road in front of a masked biker (the twelve screenshots).
- Water. Sea turtles, rays and dolphins in the diving and fishing footage, and fish visible through clear water in the Keys.

Animals that just get on with it
What's consistent across the published images is that the animals aren't events. A fishing camp screenshot in issue 382 puts three alligators in the water about two metres from a man standing on the dock, and neither the man nor the alligators are reacting to each other. In the Grassrivers chase above, the alligators are just there in the shot.
That's how it works in the places these are drawn from. It's also harder to build than a scripted encounter, because it has to keep running when nothing's happening.
Animals in Edge's demo
Edge's 29 October cover feature has a few small animal moments from the demo Rockstar showed it. A seagull flies off when Jason walks too close to some food scraps. Pigeons take off during a chase involving a dog, and the dog goes back to its owner afterwards.
Animals work for the police too. Edge reports K9 units: a police dog runs Jason down and pins him after he comes off a bike. That's the first time anyone's described an animal as part of the wanted system.
Red Dead's animals, and why 2026 Florida is different
Red Dead Redemption 2 modelled around two hundred species with individual behaviour, pelt quality tied to how cleanly you killed them, and carcasses that degraded over a ride. It's still the most detailed animal simulation in a video game, and Rockstar built it.
Whether all of that comes to a modern setting is a separate question, and there's a reasonable case that it shouldn't. Skinning and pelt grades make sense in 1899. In 2026 Florida, nuisance and invasive control under permit makes more sense than sport, and that's also what hunting in this state mostly is.
What isn't known
We don't know whether non native species behave any differently from native ones, or whether the distinction's just a label on a list. Rockstar hasn't said what tracking rewards, or which animals are Rare, Discoverable or Legendary.
It's also unclear whether anything beyond the tracked animals is tied to a mechanic, a permit, a bounty or a mission, or whether the rest are purely ambient. Nobody knows yet if animals have territories, routines or predator and prey relationships, or if they just spawn near the player.
We don't know how the 170 species split beyond birds and land mammals, and even that much comes from reports on the print issue, since Game Informer's own web article doesn't give it. And it's not known whether pythons appear at all. They're the single most obvious Florida invasive, and Rockstar hasn't shown or named them.
We don't know either whether police dogs turn up at every wanted level or only some, or whether you can do anything about one once it's on you.
Everything above is read off published imagery, Rockstar's own description and Edge's account of a demo. Nobody outside Rockstar has said they've played it yet. Review codes are reported to be out, with reviews expected on 18 November (the embargo report).
