Every word you can actually read in the GTA 6 trailers
A hotel, a boardwalk, the state on the number plates, an advert for America's favourite dissociative, and a prison notice signed by the Governor of Leonida. Read off the 2160p masters.
By Wes Calloway

Method: both trailers re-cut from Rockstar's 3840x2160 masters, then every text-bearing shot cropped at native resolution and read.
Rockstar writes things into its worlds and expects almost nobody to read them. Four and a half minutes of trailer turns out to hold a lot of legible text, and most of it's never been transcribed, because at 1080p it isn't really text. It's a smear shaped like text.
We re-cut both trailers from Rockstar's 3840x2160 masters and went through every shot with writing in it. Here's everything that resolves. At the bottom is everything that doesn't, which is the half of an exercise like this that usually gets quietly dropped.
The best thing in either trailer is a prison notice
Trailer 2 has a shot of a man walking out through a gate in a shirt reading Let Freedom Reign! over a bald eagle. Everybody noticed the shirt. Nobody seems to have read the wall he's walking past, which carries four separate signs.

A painted metal plate: NO WEAPONS BEYOND THIS [POINT]. A notice below it: STOP. [DO N]OT ENTER [UNTIL I]NSTRUCTED [BY] OFFICER. A large board carrying a state seal: PRISON V[ISITOR] INSTITUTION RULE[S], with ALL VISITORS and VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED and the word CONTRABAND legible under a chain-link shadow.
And then the one that made the whole exercise worth it, a green board at the bottom of the frame:

ADDITIONAL 1 HOUR VISIT EVERY SUNDAY. PLEASE CALL THE PRISON INFORMATION LINE FOR FURTHER DETAILS. BY ORDER OF THE STATE GOVERNOR.
Leonida has a governor. That's a bigger deal than a sign about visiting hours has any business being, because it means the state's modelled the way an American state is, with an executive who signs things, and it's more than a map with a name on it. Rockstar's never said so. A prison gate said it.
The billboard is a drug advert
The clearest single piece of writing in either trailer is a roadside billboard Jason drives past in Trailer 1.

In blue capitals: IT CURE EMOTIONS! Beneath it, boxed: AMERICA'S FAVORITE DISSOCIATIVE! To the right, a melting cartoon mascot with orange fluid running off it.
Then there's the small print, which is where this kind of joke really lives. Here's what survives the windscreen pillar:
- Patients 18-65 should use [blocked] caution. Sudden urge t[blocked]
- Call your doctor if your [blocked] more than 4 hours.
The headline is the joke twice over. It Cure Emotions isn't even a sentence, and a drug sold on the promise of curing having feelings at all is a harder gag than this series usually bothers with on scenery nobody was asked to look at.
Two named businesses on Ocean Drive
The night street in Trailer 1, the one with the white Cheetah parked with its door up, carries two legible neon signs. Neither one appears anywhere in Rockstar's press material.

HOTEL DIXON, running vertically down a building on the right in white on a dark panel. And BOARDWALK in blue neon across a frontage in the middle distance.

Hotel Dixon's the more interesting of the two. A vertical hotel sign on a mid-rise is about the most Miami Beach object there is, and naming one puts a specific business on a specific street, in a city Rockstar has otherwise shown almost entirely without labels.
The state is on the number plates
The same white Cheetah carries a personalised plate reading CH33TAH, which people have noticed. What wasn't legible at 1080p is the header above it.

It reads LEONIDA.
It's small, and it settles something. Leonida is the state, Vice City is a city inside it, and registrations carry the state exactly the way an American plate does. Put that next to the governor's signature on the prison board and you've got two separate bits of set dressing saying the fiction's built as a full state, with more to it than a region and a label.
The alligator walked in at 09:58
The security camera shot in Trailer 1, where an alligator strolls into a convenience store, has a timestamp on it.

09:58:47. A clock and no date, and the light through the windows agrees with it: mid-morning, which is when this sort of thing actually happens in Florida, and why somebody was standing there with a phone.
There's a poster on the window behind the counter reading Breakfast! over FRESHLY BAKED and a price of $2. It reads backwards from where the camera is, because it's stuck to the glass facing the street, and nobody needed to get that right for a shot lasting under two seconds.
Two things this site had wrong
Our own frame browser described the moored boats in Trailer 2 as one named Predator. At 2160p, that isn't what the hull says.

It reads UREPREDATO, running off both edges of the shot. The name's something ending in ure Predator: Pure, Lure and Sure all fit the space and there's no way to choose between them, so we're not choosing. Both captions have been corrected.
The second miss is in the same shot, and honestly it's a better detail than the boat name.

The outboard motor is badged DINKA, with FOUR STROKE FUEL INJECTION under the wordmark and 300 V6 on the cowling.
Dinka is Rockstar's Honda analogue, and it's been a motorcycle badge for twenty years. Honda's also one of the biggest outboard manufacturers in the world, and makes four-stroke fuel-injected V6 outboards in roughly that power class. Somebody at Rockstar knew that and carried the analogue across from bikes to boats, on an engine that takes up about two percent of one shot.
Everything legible, in one table
| Where | What it says | Trailer |
|---|---|---|
| Prison gatehouse wall | NO WEAPONS BEYOND THIS [POINT] | 2 |
| Prison gatehouse wall | STOP. DO NOT ENTER UNTIL INSTRUCTED BY OFFICER | 2 |
| Prison visitor board | PRISON VISITOR INSTITUTION RULES, ALL VISITORS, VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED, CONTRABAND | 2 |
| Prison green notice | ADDITIONAL 1 HOUR VISIT EVERY SUNDAY, PLEASE CALL THE PRISON INFORMATION LINE FOR FURTHER DETAILS, BY ORDER OF THE STATE GOVERNOR | 2 |
| Back of a shirt | Let Freedom Reign! | 2 |
| Overhead causeway signs | US 35 North to VCI Airport and Ambrosia; I-97 to I-397 North for Port VC and Downtown; Exit 3 for SW 9th Ave, Southside and Peacock Bay | 2 |
| Boat hull | UREPREDATO, cut off both ends | 2 |
| Outboard motor | DINKA, FOUR STROKE FUEL INJECTION, 300 V6 | 2 |
| Neon, Ocean Drive | HOTEL DIXON | 1 |
| Neon, Ocean Drive | BOARDWALK | 1 |
| Number plate | LEONIDA / CH33TAH | 1 |
| Roadside billboard | IT CURE EMOTIONS! / AMERICA'S FAVORITE DISSOCIATIVE! | 1 |
| Store security camera | 09:58:47 | 1 |
| Store window poster | Breakfast! FRESHLY BAKED $2 | 1 |
| Backlit letters | VICE | 1 |
The causeway signs have their own breakdown, because between them they name two places that turn up nowhere else and imply a whole road network.
What we couldn't read
A teal neon sign on the far left of the Ocean Drive shot ends in UNE, and the rest is outside the frame. Dune, Fortune and Neptune all fit, and there's no honest way to pick one.
A pink and green neon frontage further down the same street seems to read backwards. Either it's lettering seen from behind through glass or it's a reflection off a window, and at that distance the pixels won't say. We're not transcribing it.
The middle third of the billboard's small print sits behind the windscreen pillar of the truck Jason's driving. That's a pillar in the way, so no master, at any resolution, is going to fix it.
The mural street in Trailer 1 has a shopfront sign resolving to four or five letters ending in OOD, and the pink coupe in the same shot has a number on its rear window that could be 923 or a temperature reading. Both are guesses, so both stay on this list and out of the table above.
Detail nobody was ever meant to see
On its own, none of it means much. A hotel name is a hotel name.
Put together, though, it tells you how this world was put together. The billboard carries legal small print nobody's going to read. The convenience store has a two dollar breakfast offer in a shot lasting two seconds. The plates carry the state. A prison notice is signed by a governor nobody's ever mentioned, and an outboard motor is badged by the right manufacturer with the right engine configuration.
You can't read any of that at the resolution most people will ever watch this game at. It was all made anyway, and for us that's the real reason this series feels different from the games built to look like it.
