GTA 6's boxed copy is just a code, and some shops won't sell it

Three weeks out, here's what the no-disc box means for trade-ins, slow internet and anyone who wanted a game on the shelf.

The GTA 6 box you can pick up on 12 November won't have a disc in it. It's a download code, and at least two game shops have said since June that they won't sell it at all.

That's worth going over again now, because with launch three weeks out a lot of people are only just pre-ordering the boxed copy, and plenty of them still assume there's a game inside.

What Take-Two actually said

Take-Two's press release on 24 June described "the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box". It goes on sale on 12 November "to support pre-loading", a week before the 19 November release, and Push Square quoted a line from the same announcement saying "a disc will not be included in the box". The boxed copy is the Standard Edition, priced at $79.99 in the US.

So the box exists mostly so you can grab a code in a shop, start the download on the 12th and be ready to play at launch.

The shops that said no

Video Games Plus, a Canadian chain that's been going for nearly 40 years, posted on X the same day that it doesn't carry console products "that contain only a digital download code" and wouldn't be selling GTA 6 under its current policy. It was polite about it. It said the decision "is not a reflection of the game itself", and that it'd happily stock a version with a disc if Rockstar ever makes one.

Loot Box Gaming, a small US physical-media shop, was blunter. GamesRadar quoted its post: "If a product can't honor the people who pay their hard earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it to our customers."

Neither is going to dent sales, and Dexerto said as much in its write-up. GamesRadar added that Circana's Mat Piscatella doesn't expect dropping the disc to make a noticeable difference. Big chains like GameStop and Walmart are taking boxed pre-orders as normal, so you won't struggle to find one.

Trade-ins and second-hand copies

This is where the box really costs you something. A disc can be sold on, swapped with a mate or traded in at GameStop. A code gets tied to your PlayStation or Xbox account the moment you redeem it, and after that the box is just a box. There won't be a cheap pre-owned GTA 6 on the shelf in January, and there's nothing to lend your cousin once you've finished the story.

Slow internet and collectors

If your connection's slow, or you're on a capped plan, the box doesn't help you at all. You'll download every gigabyte either way, and Rockstar still hasn't published an install size (our file size piece has the numbers that are actually out there). Start on the 12th, honestly. Don't leave it for launch night.

Collectors get a case and some art. There's a rumour about a paper map: Notebookcheck reported on 12 October that a GameStop in Pennsylvania put up a sign promising a "physical collector's map" with pre-orders, but neither Rockstar nor GameStop's head office has backed it up. Treat it as a maybe.

Is a disc coming later?

Nobody's confirmed one. In June, a Rockstar Support reply shared by the GTA 6 Info account said "You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months", which Digital Trends pointed out is vague enough to mean almost anything. VGC noted that Take-Two had already denied plans for a separate physical version after launch, and Rockstar hasn't said anything new since.

If you just want to play on the 19th, the box works fine. If you want something you can resell or keep on a shelf with the game actually on it, there isn't a version of GTA 6 that does that yet. Our preload guide covers the 12 November timing and what to clear before then.
