How big is GTA 6? Nobody has the real number yet, and the one going round is fake
No store listing shows an install size. The 676.7 GB screenshot was doctored. But the numbers we do have give a decent idea of how much space to clear before preload opens on 12 November.

A month out, Grand Theft Auto 6 still doesn't have a published install size. Rockstar hasn't given one, and neither the PlayStation Store nor the Xbox Store shows one. The Xbox listing has a placeholder of a few hundred megabytes right now, and that's the store page, not the game.
So every number you see today is a guess. Some are reasonable. One's a hoax.
The 676.7 GB screenshot
This is the one that keeps coming back. It's an image of an Xbox Store page listing GTA 6 at 676.7 GB, first posted on Christmas Eve 2025, and it's doctored. You can tell from the image itself: it lists Xbox One as a platform, and GTA 6 isn't coming to Xbox One. A game that size also wouldn't fit on a standard PS5 at all, and no publisher would ship a game like that.
Red Dead 2, fast drives and no disc
- Red Dead Redemption 2 needed a little over 100 GB on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018. That was a last-generation game with a smaller map, on consoles with slow hard drives, where games often stored the same data more than once just to load it faster.
- The current consoles decompress in hardware. PS5 and Xbox Series machines are built to stream compressed assets fast, which is part of why their games haven't grown as quickly as a lot of people expected.
- There's no disc to fit. The physical edition ships as a download code, so Rockstar isn't held to a 100 GB Blu-ray either way.
Put that together and most estimates land between about 150 and 200 GB for the base game on PS5 and Series X, with a day-one patch on top. That range is plausible. It's still an estimate, though, and we wouldn't plan around the top of it as if it were a ceiling. Nobody knows how big the day-one patch is either, and for a game this size it could be large.
How much room your console really has
The advertised size of a console's drive isn't what you get to use.
- PS5 (825 GB): about 667 GB usable.
- Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB usable.
- Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB usable. This is the one to worry about. A 200 GB game takes more than half of it, and we don't know yet whether the Series S version will be meaningfully smaller, like it's been for other games.
Clear 250 GB before 12 November
Preloading opens a week before launch. If you want it to finish overnight instead of failing at 80 percent, clear 250 GB now. That covers the high end of the estimates plus a patch, and if the real figure's smaller you've lost nothing.
If your console's already full, our SSD guide covers which drives work in a PS5 and when deleting old games is cheaper than buying one. On Series S, check whether any of your installed games are already on an external drive, since you can move them back later.
We'll update this page with the real store figures the moment they show up.
