The GTA 6 launch trailer is out, and it finally explains why Jason turned to crime

Ninety seconds, no warning, captured on a base PS5. A prison phone call, an army discharge, a lot of helicopters, and a new Justice single with three headline features.

Rockstar dropped the Grand Theft Auto 6 launch trailer at 2pm UK time on Thursday 15 October, on every one of its channels at once, with no teaser and no countdown. It's about ninety seconds long, and it's almost certainly the last trailer before the game unlocks on 19 November, five weeks from today.

The end card says it was captured entirely in game on a PlayStation 5. That's the base PS5, with no Pro in sight. Keep that in mind, because we'll come back to it further down.

Jason finally gets a reason

Two trailers and a twenty-six minute Extended Look have shown what Jason Duval does. This is the first one that tells you why. In voiceover he says he got into trouble in the army and didn't leave on good terms, and that the people who normally lend money won't lend it to someone like him.

It's only a couple of lines, but a lot hangs on them. A dishonourable or other-than-honourable discharge shuts doors in America that never reopen: veterans' benefits, a lot of employers, and in practice a lot of credit. So Rockstar has written Jason a reason crime is the only door left, and that's a different character from a guy who just enjoys it. It also sits awkwardly with the undercover cop theory, since a man forced out of the military is about the last person a police department would hand a badge.

Coverage also points to a shot of Jason in army gear, looking younger and wearing a training school T-shirt, which reads like a flashback. That's an interpretation, though. Nothing on screen captions it, so take it as one.

Lucia starts on the phone

The trailer opens with Lucia calling Jason from prison, which fits everything Rockstar's shown of her since the first trailer put her in an orange jumpsuit. Later, in the shower scene most of the coverage has led with, the camera lingers on her ankle monitor.

That ankle monitor is the detail I'd hang on to. An electronic tag means supervised release: she's out, but the state knows where she is. Rockstar hasn't said whether that turns into a mechanic, a zone she can't leave, or just a story beat.

Helicopters, a swamp and a hotel pool

  • Helicopters, over and over. Several outlets count at least four helicopter scenes, including one going down behind Jason and Lucia firing from one over Vice City streets.
  • A night operation in Grassrivers. Jason and two armed men wade through the swamp with night vision goggles pushed up on their heads.
  • A dirt bike off a ramp, in real time, with no slow motion and no prompt. Some coverage is calling that the return of stunt jumps. Rockstar hasn't.
  • A rooftop jump into a hotel pool, both of them together. That looks a lot more like something from a mission than something you'd pull off in free roam.

None of that adds up to a feature list, and the trailer doesn't try to be one. It's a story trailer built around the relationship, which is what Rockstar's been selling since December 2023.

A new Justice single

The track is Flower in a Hurricane, a new single from Justice featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Rockstar's music page credits Justice as the game's original score composers, and lists the song on *Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album*, thirty-four original tracks out on 19 November. The radio stations got their own announcement a week earlier.

The PS5 line, and the downgrade argument

Within a day, side by side comparisons with the first trailer were going round with the word downgrade attached. The launch trailer is softer, and it's got a heavier grade on it. Some of that's styling. Some of it's very likely the honest result of capturing on the base console instead of the most flattering hardware around.

That lines up with what Digital Foundry found in August: a generational leap, with visible compromises on the base PS5. By putting the hardware on the end card, Rockstar's choosing to show you what most players will actually see. Honestly, I'd take that over a prettier trailer.

Still nothing on the ending, stunt jumps or PC

The trailer won't tell you how the story ends, how many missions there are, or whether the romance is a choice. It doesn't confirm stunt jumps, and there's nothing new on PC. The launch checklist is still the page to read before 19 November.
